EDEKA store in Freiburg required new sales space as an interim solution
During the redevelopment phase of the EDEKA supermarket on L?rracher-Stra?e in Freiburg, EDEKA Handelsgesellschaft Südwest required a transitional space appropriate for a food retailer.
A tent system solution was developed and implemented in the form of a collaborative venture between EDEKA Südwest, architectural practice Müller + Huber in Oberkirch and R?DER.
The basic construction comprises two H-Line hall tents, each measuring 20 x 45 m with side heights of 4.20 m, a double-nave layout and a total useable area of 1,800 m2. In addition to the approximately 1,600 m2 of sales space, there is further room for offices, sanitary facilities and staff areas as well as cooling units.
The hall's roof comprises a double-layer thermal roof panel and the side walls are made from 40-mm insulated panels, which in themselves fulfil a major part of the air-conditioning prerequisites. The two halls are linked by a walkable roof rail that can be heated in the event of snow or frost. The room-height Trevira ceiling cladding (fire protection classification B1) and the box-shaped cladding of the roof rail give the interior retail space character.
The multiply-reinforced hall floor (with a loading capacity of 800 kg/m2) is covered with tough, grey-melange PVC, which fulfills all hygiene requirements. Office and staff rooms have windows and the emergency exits are positioned in line with valid regulations.
In collaboration with the heating company Helot, an air-conditioning concept was implemented combining heating units and air-cooling systems that will provide a pleasant environment on both hot summer days and when it is cold in winter. The lighting system (500 lux), comprising light bands, ensures the appropriate lighting conditions and supports the presentation of the extensive ranges of goods.
EDEKA staff and customers feel very much at home in the "provisional" space, which was this concept's number one objective.
